Entrando in menopausa, la produzione di estrogeni subisce prima numerose fluttuazioni e poi una drastica riduzione; in parallelo anche i livelli di progesterone, un altro ormone femminile connesso alla fertilità, anche se in maniera più lineare, diminuisce sensibilmente. Si può dedurre quindi che l’azione estrogenica, che protegge dalla rarefazione ossea e dalle malattie cardiovascolari, viene compromessa, esponendo così le donne in menopausa al famoso effetto chiamato rebound, o rimbalzo.
